Many Arborfield Old Boys would have been saddened to learn of the recent death of Dave Wayland.
Dave joined the Army Apprentices School as an Easter Bunny in April 1958 an after the usual single term in HQ Company joined D Company for the remainder of his three year Army Apprenticeship training to be a Vehicle Mechanic.
After Arborfield he spent a relatively short period at Borden before joining his first Regiment where he really learnt the skills of his trade.
He spent the majority of his Mans service in BAOR where the most enjoyable years were served with Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. His wife June recollects the number of times he returned to their married quarter for lunch often arriving in a 10 tonner!
At the end of his 9 year stintbhe retired to live in Southend with his wife June another daughter. However memories of BAOR were always there so in the 2000s they upped sticks and moved to live Southern Germany where they still lived until his death in July 2024.
Dave was an ardent member the Arborfield Old Boys Association and was a regular attendee at many Reunions through the late 1900’s and early 2000’s..he could always be spotted on the parades and never shy of being in a prominent position for the photographs. At the Dinners he was one of the most vocal in joining in with singing of ‘The Reds’. He also had a terrific sense of humour and managed relate many fascinating tales over a few pints in the Sgts Mess after theReunion dinner/
Dave unfortunately started to suffer with Alzheimers disease a few years ago. June in an attempt to help his recollection managed to regularly obtain photos of activities and people from time spent at Arborfield. She also received an Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders glengarry complete with REME cap badge.
