Smiler suffered a heart attack in Thailand on 4th June, he had recently started work as the engineer for an AS 365. Smiler and I were good pals at Arborfield although in separate companies.
We both were selected to do ONC; which meant full time education in 8 div, Wednesday mornings were allotted to trade, Smiler, Dick Croud and I were the only 3 Air Techs to do 02, so loads of toast and a flask of tea were purloined from the cookhouse and a completely wasted morning spent, fooling about and trying to drown each other in the parts washer.
Smiler achieved the rank of A/T Sgt, and was awarded the Carr Memorial Trophy as the best air Tech of the intake. We of course had to do the missing 9 Div trade training at Wallop before qualifying. Smiler was posted to 75 Ac Workshop in Malaya and I went off to Catterick!
